FLY'S HOUSE

FLY’S HOUSE is located on a corner lot within a newly developed residential area — a housing typology that is becoming increasingly common in Vietnamese cities. With two street frontages and a chamfered site geometry, this type of plot often pushes architecture toward expressive formal gestures, while the tropical climate, intense sunlight, and the homeowner’s need for privacy call for more sustainable living solutions. For A+ Architects, the challenge was not simply to create a comfortable house, but to transform the limitations of a corner lot into genuine living value.

The design intentionally “gives up” a portion of the corner at the intersection to merge two small courtyards into one continuous central garden. Around this green core, the living room, kitchen, and resting spaces are organized, creating an uninterrupted connection between indoors and outdoors, as well as among family members.

Passive design strategies are prioritized throughout the project. Generous verandas and deep roof overhangs form an effective climatic buffer against the tropical sun and rain. The rooftop greenery helps reduce heat radiation and stabilize the microclimate, while the solar panel system contributes to lowering operational energy consumption, allowing the house to “breathe” in harmony with the natural environment.

The spirit of “Kiệm” — a fundamental principle in A+ Architects’ design philosophy — is clearly reflected in the project. Beyond conserving operational energy, the house also embraces material frugality by preserving most of the owner’s existing furniture, including the dining table, sofa, beds, and cabinets, integrating them into the new space instead of replacing them entirely. The “floating” fence system, combining steel mesh and greenery, also becomes a soft climatic transition layer between the house and the urban surroundings.

Rather than maximizing the buildable footprint, FLY’S HOUSE chooses to preserve part of the site for greenery, natural light, and open living spaces. The project represents a modest effort by A+ Architects to contribute an additional “breathing space” to the urban fabric, while proposing a gentler approach to the increasingly common corner-house typology in Vietnam.
